How to Change Your Life: The 7 Stages of Personal Transformation Nobody Talks About

Why do some people successfully change their lives while others stay stuck, even when they desperately want something different? An Army behavioral health training gave me an unexpected answer — and it reshaped how I think about mindset transformation, motivation, and lasting change.

Why the real breakthrough happens long before anyone else can see it.

If you’ve been wondering how to change your life and feel like you keep hitting the same wall no matter how hard you try, the answer might not be about trying harder — it might be about understanding which stage of change you’re actually in.

This weekend I was at Army drill with my unit, the 883rd Medical Detachment — a Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) behavioral health unit. (more on my story here)

We’d just finished our PT test that morning. Afterward, I was sitting through Army Substance Abuse Program training — tired, half-listening to a presentation on behavior change and motivational interviewing — when one question on the screen stopped me cold:

Why do some people change and others don’t?

The Question That Changed Everything

And suddenly I wasn’t thinking about substance use anymore. I was thinking about trauma. Toxic relationships. Burnout. Financial instability. The entrepreneur who knows they’re capable of more but keeps repeating the same patterns. The parent who’s spent years putting everyone else ahead of themselves.

I was thinking about the work I teach inside The Treasure in You™.

Because here’s what clicked: the psychological journey of changing any behavior isn’t limited to substance use. There are recognizable stages every person moves through when they’re trying to change their life — and understanding them changes everything about how we think about mindset transformation, motivation, and why people get stuck.

We tend to believe transformation happens the moment someone finally acts.

They left. They launched the business. A boundary got set that never had before. Something they’d been avoiding for years finally happened.

And everyone watching says, “They finally changed.”

But sitting in that classroom, I realized the truth is almost the opposite:

The breakthrough doesn’t begin when you change your life. It begins in your mind — months, sometimes years, before anyone else sees it.

Why Is It So Hard to Change Your Life?

We’re taught that changing your life is mostly about action: set the boundary, start the budget, apply for the job, stop procrastinating, do the thing.

But knowing what to do isn’t the same as being psychologically ready to do it.

Behavior-change research has long described change as a series of stages rather than one instant decision. The Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change) names them: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance. People don’t move through them in a straight line — they progress, stall, backslide, retry, and keep going.

Which means someone can understand exactly what needs to change and still not be ready to act on it. That distinction matters enormously.

Maybe you’re not lazy. Maybe you don’t need another motivational speech or another strategy. Maybe you’re just trying to solve the wrong stage of your own transformation.

Translating what I learned in that Army classroom into the framework I use inside The Treasure in You™, I landed on seven thresholds every person crosses on the way to real, lasting change:

SEE → TRUTH → WRESTLE → BELIEVE → CHOOSE → ACT → BECOME

The 7 Stages of Personal Transformation

Stage 1: SEE — Recognizing What You’ve Normalized

“This is just how my life is.”

Before you can change your life, you have to recognize what actually needs to change — and that’s harder than it sounds. People normalize enormous amounts of discomfort:

  • A toxic relationship becomes “relationships are just hard.”
  • Financial instability becomes “I’ve always been bad with money.”
  • Burnout becomes “I’m just a hard worker.”
  • Self-abandonment becomes “I’m just taking care of everyone else.”
  • Survival mode becomes “this is just adulthood.”

You can live inside a painful pattern for years without ever naming it as one. That’s why the first stage of personal transformation isn’t action — it’s awareness.

Ask yourself: What have I normalized that’s actually costing me the life I want?

Stage 2: TRUTH — Admitting Something Has to Change

Eventually something disrupts the story: exhaustion, a breakup, a hard conversation, therapy, prayer, watching someone else live differently. Or just waking up one day and thinking, I cannot keep doing this.

This is where self-awareness gets uncomfortable — because now you see it. But seeing it isn’t the same as being ready to change it.

Ask yourself: What is this actually costing me? What have I been minimizing or explaining away?

Before transformation can happen, you have to stop negotiating with reality.

Stage 3: WRESTLE — Understanding Why You Feel Stuck

This might be the most misunderstood stage of the entire process, because now something complicated happens: you want something different, and you’re afraid of what getting it will cost you. That’s ambivalence, and it explains almost everything about why people struggle to change.

You want to grow your business… but fear visibility.
Financial independence sounds good — until fear of failure shows up.
You want boundaries… but fear disappointing people.
Rest calls to you, but you’re afraid of what happens if you stop pushing.

We tend to look at someone stuck in this stage and think, they’re not motivated enough, they’re making excuses. But often it’s not a motivation problem — it’s a protection problem. Part of them wants the change; another part is trying to protect them from what they believe it will cost.

That’s why pushing harder rarely works here. It just creates more resistance.

Instead of asking “why can’t I just do it?” — ask: What am I afraid changing will cost me? What is staying here giving me, and what is it costing me? If nothing changes for five years, where does this road take me?

Stage 4: BELIEVE — Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

The question quietly shifts from “is another life possible?” to “could it be possible for me?” Those are not the same question.

You can believe other people build successful businesses without believing you can. You can believe people rebuild after divorce without believing you will. Transformation becomes personal the moment possibility turns into self-efficacy — real confidence in your own ability to take the next action.

Your internal language starts to shift: maybe I could… maybe I’m capable… maybe my past doesn’t have to dictate my future. This is where you begin overcoming limiting beliefs — not with fantasy, but with evidence: something different is possible, and I have agency in creating it.

Stage 5: CHOOSE — Making the Decision to Change Your Life

The question changes from “should I?” to “how?” You might still be afraid, still have doubts, still have no idea how it will work — but you’ve stopped negotiating with yourself about whether it needs to happen. You’ve chosen.

This is where a strategy actually becomes useful — because strategy handed to someone before they’ve decided is just information. Strategy handed to someone after they’ve decided is a roadmap.

When someone shifts from “I don’t know if I can” to “okay, how do I do this?” — pay attention. Something real has shifted.

Stage 6: ACT — Turning Mindset Transformation Into Behavior Change

This is the stage everyone else finally sees. They leave. They launch. Prices finally go up. The thing they’d been avoiding finally gets done. And everyone says, “they changed.”

But they didn’t change that day — that was simply the day their internal transformation became visible externally. The real work had been happening long before.

And action brings its own challenge: change doesn’t automatically feel good. The old life was miserable, but familiar. The new one is healthier — and terrifying. This is where you meet uncertainty, other people’s reactions, mistakes, and the pull back toward what you know.

So the work becomes: regulate, get support, solve problems, keep going. One brave action doesn’t create a transformed life — you have to learn to sustain it.

Stage 7: BECOME — Creating Lasting Identity Transformation

Eventually the language shifts from “I’m trying to become…” to “I am.”

I’m trying to set boundaries becomes I don’t abandon myself to keep people comfortable.
Getting better with money stops being a struggle and becomes I’m someone who takes responsibility for my financial future.
I’m trying to build a business becomes I’m a business owner who builds systems instead of carrying everything myself.

You’re no longer performing a new behavior — you’re becoming someone who makes different choices naturally. This is why lasting change is never only about what you do. It’s about your relationship with yourself.

And when you occasionally slip into an old pattern, you don’t conclude “see, I haven’t changed.” You notice it, correct course, and keep becoming.

You Cannot Coach Everyone From the Action Stage

Here’s the lesson I couldn’t shake after that training: we constantly tell people to do it, leave, start, stop, change — and then wonder why nothing happens.

But maybe we’re handing an Action-stage solution to a Wrestle-stage problem.

Instead of asking “what does this person need to DO?” — ask “what internal threshold does this person need to cross next?”

  • Do they need to SEE something they’ve normalized?
  • Do they need to tell themselves the TRUTH?
  • Do they need space to WRESTLE with fear and ambivalence?
  • Do they need evidence they can BELIEVE something different?
  • Are they ready to CHOOSE?
  • Do they need a plan so they can ACT?
  • Have they already changed — and now need support to BECOME the person who sustains it?

Those are completely different problems, and they require completely different conversations.

What Stage of Change Are You In?

If you’ve been searching for how to change your mindset, how to overcome limiting beliefs, or how to create lasting personal transformation — stop asking “what’s wrong with me, why haven’t I done it yet?”

Ask instead: what threshold haven’t I crossed yet?

Because your breakthrough may already be underway, long before anyone else can see it. Sometimes it’s not the day someone leaves, launches, or finally sets the boundary. Sometimes it’s quieter than that — the moment something inside you says, I see it. I believe something different is possible. And I’m ready to choose differently.

The action comes after.

That is the treasure in you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 7 stages of personal transformation?

SEE, TRUTH, WRESTLE, BELIEVE, CHOOSE, ACT, and BECOME — a psychological progression from recognizing a pattern to fully embodying a new identity.

Why is it so hard to change your life even when you want to?

Because knowing what to change and being psychologically ready to change it are two different things. Most people get stuck in the WRESTLE stage — caught between wanting change and fearing what it will cost.

How do you know what stage of change you’re in?

Ask which threshold you haven’t crossed yet: awareness (SEE), honesty (TRUTH), resolving fear (WRESTLE), self-belief (BELIEVE), decision (CHOOSE), strategy (ACT), or identity (BECOME).

Why Everything Gets Worse Right Before It Gets Better

What feels like disruption is actually proof that your prayer has been received. If your life started falling apart right after you decided to become the version of you who has it all, this is for you. The chaos isn’t a contradiction; it’s a confirmation. When you declare a new standard, everything that doesn’t match it begins to unravel. This isn’t falling apart; it’s alignment doing its job. You’re not stuck; you’re between selves. The discomfort you feel is the energy of expansion. Let it collapse. Walk forward like it’s unfolding — because it is. Don’t flinch. Stay in agreement with what you asked for.
